Soft Tissue Trauma

Soft tissue injury involves damage to muscles, ligaments and tendons throughout the body. Common soft tissue injuries typically result from sprain, strain, contusion or overuse and are typically followed by pain, swelling, stiffness and/or bruising.


A sprain is a trauma to ligaments caused by overstretching.
A strain is a trauma to muscles or tendons caused by overstretching.

Therapeutic intervention in this population may involve:

  • Protection of unstable joints
  • Modality implementation for pain/ edema management (heat, ice, ultrasound, estim)
  • Establishing progressive exercise program
  • Implementation of therapeutic exercise/activities to regain pain free active range of motion
  • Strengthening/ Stretching
