Hemiplegia (sometimes called hemiparesis) is paralysis of half of the body. Hemiplegia is a neurological condition that results in varying degree of weakness and lack of control of one side of the body. This condition can be congenital, resulting from brain damage before, during or soon after birth or may develop in adulthood following illnesses such as a stroke, accident, infection or tumour.

Occupational Therapy intervention in this population may include:

  • Retraining in self-care skills and adapting tasks or environments
  • Introduction of adaptive equipment to maximize the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) safely (e.g., bathing, dressing, functional mobility)
  • Education in one-handed techniques
  • Therapeutic exercises and activities to address muscle weakness or sensory loss
  • Energy conservation education
  • Development of individualized program for safe use of the affected arm and to regain strength, balance, and functional movement.
